What is Sexual Harassment?

- Persistent requests for dates or romantic attention after being declined
What is Sexual Assault?
While sexual harassment typically violates civil laws, sexual assault typically refers to acts that are criminal and involves more direct physical or coercive sexual behavior
Examples of Sexual Assault:
- Unwanted physical contact such as groping, grabbing, or fondling, attempted rape or forced penetration
- Forcing or attempting to force physical acts such as kissing or sexual intercourse
- Using intimidation, physical threats, or violent force to compel someone into a sexual act
- Forcing someone to engage in sexual activities by threatening to harm their job, career, or reputation
Important Considerations:
- Sexual harassment does not need to be directly from a superior; it can come from co-workers, clients, customers, or others in the workplace.
- The behavior can occur in-person, digitally (emails, texts, or social media), or through other forms of communication.
- The conduct must be unwelcome.
These behaviors can lead to legal claims under federal laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, state anti-discrimination statutes, or sexual assault laws.
